The neo-Gothic church was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of a former Marian chapel. The temple holds a small size, a wonderful statue of the Virgin Mary made of dark wood. The statue is the goal of numerous pilgrimages of the faithful, which have been taking place regularly since at least the 16th century.
The temple stands at the place where oak grew during the Middle Ages, constituting the administrative border between Péruwelz, Condé and Blaton. The figure of the Mother of God was hung on the tree. In the 17th century, the oak died and the sculpture disappeared. A new statue was created from the wood of the fallen tree, for which a small stone chapel was built. In the following centuries it was expanded, and in the nineteenth century it was replaced by the current church.
When visiting the basilica, it is also worth paying attention to the series of stained glass, which depicted the history of the statue, the oak and the subsequent stages of construction of the chapel and church.
