The archive, founded in Brussels in 1920, was to gather all the world's knowledge - in the form of books, newspapers, posters from around the world. The work of Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine is considered an analogue precursor of Internet search engines. Mundaneum has been housed in Mons since 1992 as the central archive of the French community in Belgium.
