The museum is located in a city palace built in the Renaissance style at the beginning of the 16th century. It is devoted primarily to the history of the city and the whole of Burgundy. There is a collection of paintings and sculptures, including works by Jan Verhoeven, Willem Geets and Jan Verhuyck. There are also 8 valuable, carved altar settings from the 16th century.
A special family trail has been prepared for families with children. It leads through all the museum rooms where the elements of puzzles and tasks to be performed, thematically related to a given room or exhibits, are hidden. Modern, interactive information panels have also been created for younger visitors.
The museum's collection also includes a collection of historic books and manuscripts, including a book from 1515 with choral songs. In 2007, it was classified as a monument and a "Flemish masterpiece".
