The historic edifice was the first tenement house built by Victor Hort in the Art Nouveau style. It was created in 1893 and is considered a turning point in the work of the architect. In 2005, the building was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra Medal, awarded to monuments particularly important for cultural heritage.
Hort designed the house for his friend Eugène Autrique. Although the Art Nouveau style was just beginning, you can see all its basic features in the building: the use of natural light, decorations with floral motifs, cast iron columns and mosaics. It is also worth paying attention to the colorful stained glass and the characteristic technique of applying plaster, called sgraffito.
Currently, the building regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences and cultural events. The building itself can be visited individually or with a guide.
