The museum's collections include an extensive collection of Flemish and Belgian paintings. The most valuable exhibits include paintings of masters from the Baroque Renaissance, as well as Flemish expressionism. You can watch here, among others works by Jan van Eyck or Hieronymus Bosch.
The collections are divided chronologically. Among them there are several hundred paintings and over a thousand sketches and drawings from the period from the 15th to the 19th century. In turn, the collection of works from the 20th and 21st century includes slightly more than 200 paintings, 101 graphics, 54 drawings and 2 sculptures. They are presented so as to best present the dynamic evolution of modern art.
The museum was officially opened in 1930, but the history of its creation dates back to the beginning of the 18th century and the establishment of the Academy of Fine Arts. This makes the facility one of the oldest museums in Belgium. Currently, the collections are stored in two buildings - permanent exhibitions in the main building, and temporary exhibitions in the Arenthuis branch.
