A complex of small houses surrounded by a high wall was built in 1715. At that time it served as a shelter for poor families and was in the estate of its founder Christiaan De Vos. Four of the six houses and the adjacent Baroque chapel have survived to modern times.
Initially, six poor families lived in the shelter. After the founder's death, his son retained the right to property, but the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk parish, i.e. the Church of St. Mary, took over the complex and its inhabitants. Therefore, the inhabitants of the houses were obliged to pray in the chapel twice a day. After death, they were also buried in the church cemetery.
