Museum Mayer van den Bergh is a priceless collection of over 1,000 paintings, among which there are paintings from the period from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century. Next to them you can admire a collection of drawings and sculptures, in which the oldest exhibits are dated to the twelfth century. The exhibition is complemented by Romanesque and Gothic examples of arts and crafts, goldsmiths, ceramics and numismatics.
One of the most famous paintings in the collection of the Museum Mayer van den Bergh is "Crazy Margaret" (also called "Crazy Gotha") - the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder from 1561-1562. There are also unique sculptures attributed to the 14th century master Heinrich von Constanz and richly illuminated breviary with 1412 pages from the beginning 16th century
The facility is named after the art collector Fritz Mayer van der Bergh (1858-1901). His dream was to create his own museum. When he died as a result of a fall from a horse, his mother completed the construction of the current museum in 1904.
