The pedestrianized street is a popular shopping arcade, famous for the highest commercial rental prices in the Benelux. In the past there was wooden lake - a place of soaking wood before processing into furniture elements. This is where today's name comes from - Meir (from the Dutch "meere", meaning "lake").
