Volkstheater

Local name: Volkstheater

Volkstheater, literally People's Theater, is a building from the second half of the nineteenth century, still operating as a theater. The mission of the founders of the theater was to provide the residents of Vienna with the opportunity to commune with classical arts and to reach a wider audience with contemporary performances. This mission continues to this day.

The initiators of the creation of the theater were, among others, playwright Ludwig Anzengruber and furniture manufacturer Michael Thonet. It was to counterbalance the traditional and elite Hofburgtheater, i.e. court theater. From the very beginning of the theater's existence modern art has been staged here, in particular expressionist arts. They exhibited their works here, among others Ibsen, Bahr and Schönherr.

The building itself was designed by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. The theater building was partially destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt according to original plans.
