The museum presents a private collection of works of art by Rudolf and Elizabeth Leopold. It houses the world's largest collection of works by Egon Schiele, an outstanding painter and the most important cartoonist of Austrian Impressionism. There are also works of Gustav Klimt and many other paintings, graphics and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum exhibition is largely dedicated to the Art Nouveau in painting, graphics and crafts from Jugendstil to expressionism. Apart from Klimt and Schiele, there are works by Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Richard Gerstl, Oskar Kokoschka and many other artists. An additional element of the exhibition, introducing the mood of this period, are fragments of the works of Sigmund Freud.
Particularly noteworthy is the exhibition entitled Vienna 1900, which presents this era from many different perspectives.
The museum building is one of the most modern institutions of this type. The key element of its arrangement is a 24-meter high white cube rising towards the Viennese sky. Large windows and a glass roof give originality and elegance.
