The Augustinian church is a Gothic building next to the Hofburg Palace, the winter residence of the Habsburgs. From 1634, this temple served as the parish church of the imperial court. Weddings of members of the imperial family were held here, and now in the side chapel there is a mausoleum, including 54 urns with the hearts of the Habsburg family.
The church and monastery were founded by Prince Frederick III the Beautiful for the Augustinian order in 1327. This temple is also known because here in 1683 Jan III Sobieski participated in a thanksgiving mass for victory over the Turks. A plaque commemorating the "relief of Vienna" was placed on the wall of the church on the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna.
The church also has a long musical tradition. Franz Schubert played his Mass No. 1 in F major here, and Anton Bruckner created his Mass in F minor for the church. Currently, classical music concerts take place here regularly.
