The Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist temple that belongs to the Nipponzan-Myôhôji branch of Japanese origin. Attention is drawn especially to its snow-white walls, shape unusual for European architecture, and golden figures.
One of the most important demands of the Nipponzan-Myôhôji community is world peace. As part of its activities to promote peace, this community built about eighty such Pagodas around the world, and the Vienna Pagoda was one of the first.
The Vienna Peace Pagoda was founded in 1983, when Buddhism was officially recognized as a religion in Austria. He is currently under the care of the Japanese monk Gyosei Masunagi, who lives here alone.
Meetings of Viennese Buddhists take place here, who organize joint meditations here and celebrate the annual Vesakh festival, during which participants pray, eat, play drums and dance together.
