The square is one of the most historically significant squares in the center of Vienna. It is located in the oldest part of the city, in the immediate vicinity of the medieval ghettos. When Henry II Jasomirgott moved his residence from Regensburg, he built a palace here for himself and his wife Theodora to Vienna.
