The Mönchsberg Museum of Modern Art is housed in a four-story building with a total exhibition space of 2,300 sq m. The museum presents works of contemporary art from the 20th and 21st century. As part of various temporary exhibitions, paintings, graphics, photography, sculpture and other fields of art are presented. Works of Austrian, European and world artists are exhibited here.
The museum owes its name to the Mönchsberg hill on which it is located. The museum is headquartered in the building known as Cafe Winkler. Earlier, a casino operated here, and at the beginning of the 21st century the building was adapted for the needs of the art gallery. The museum was opened in 2004. A characteristic feature of this museum is the raw condition of the exhibition halls.
The museum also conducts educational activities dedicated to children and young people. Workshops and activities for children of all ages are organized here to promote communing with art.
