It is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula. It is karst and measures 48 km in length. Its average depth is 7-10 m, but in the deepest place it reaches 44 m. On the lake there are islands with historic monasteries. 280 species of birds live here, it is also one of the few places in Europe where pelicans can be found.
