The National Museum of Medieval Art in Korcza is the largest gallery in Albania dedicated to the medieval national heritage. Established on April 24, 1980, the museum collects various exhibits representing medieval art, especially from the Byzantine period. The most important items in the rich collection are above all valuable Christian icons, stone sculptures and decorations.
The National Museum of Medieval Art in Korcza is the work of great Albanian artists. Among museum works of art tourists can admire icons of painters such as Onufry, Dawid Selenica and brothers Kostandin and Athanas Zografi considered to be the greatest Albanian artists of the Middle Ages.
The museum's permanent collection presents almost 200 icons created between the 13th and 19th century. The most valuable exhibition is the collection of 6500 icons considered to be the most important in all of Europe. The entire gallery houses almost 7,000 artifacts, dating from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century.
