Fokshany is a city in Romanian Moldova that played a significant role in the formation of the unified Romanian state in the second half of the 19th century. The local museum reminds about these events, and among the monuments there are also interesting churches from different periods.
The city was founded in the late Middle Ages and from the very beginning it was an important trading point on the route from Russia to the Balkans. Representatives of Russia and Turkey, as well as the Habsburg Monarchy, met here many times to determine the conditions for the distribution of influence in the region.
However, the most important role was played by Fokshans after the Crimean War. The city's representatives actively sought to unite Moldova and Wallachia, which became the basis for the creation of the Romanian state. It was also the seat of the new state's legislative committee. These events are reminded by the Union Monument in the main square and the Union Museum .
The main attractions of Fokshan are its oldest monuments, i.e. the Church of the Birth of St. John the Baptist and the Orthodox Church of the Emperors Constantine and Helena . As the capital of the region, the city is also home to the Vrancea Museum, which presents the history and culture of the surrounding lands. There is also the People's Ateneum with a rich cultural program.
