Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills have been classified as "Outstanding Natural Beauty Area" (AONB). Various types of landscape can be observed here, including forests, heaths and meadows, but the largest area is covered by hills. The most famous places include Gravelly Hill, Colley Hill, Merrow Downs and The Devil's Punch Bowl. Numerous walking, cycling and horse riding paths have been marked out here.
The Devil's Punch Bowl is a large trough in the form of a natural amphitheater. There are three legends related to its creation. The first says that the hollow arose when the devil, angry at the growing number of churches in Sussex, decided to dig a deep tunnel to the English Channel and flood the entire area with water. According to the second, the devil was throwing clods of the god Thor in this place (the alternative version says that it was the other way around). In turn, according to the last one, there was a duel of giants, and one of them chose the land from here to throw it at the opponent.
