Burghley House
Burghley House is a vast 16th-century manor house, a leading example of the so-called "Wonderful houses" from the Tudor era. The external appearance largely retains the original Elizabethan character, but most of the interior design comes from reconstruction from the end of the 17th century. There is a huge collection of works of art, including one of the most important private collections of Italian paintings from the 17th century and the oldest from the collection of Japanese ceramics in the West.
In addition, you can see wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Among the antique furnishings are four large beds and valuable fabrics and tapestries.
The residence is surrounded by a historic park designed by Capability Brown. There is a modern sculpture park in it. In 2007, the Garden of Surprises was also created, which is a reconstruction of the Tudor garden with rotating Caesar heads and gushing fountains. There is also a conservatory, a café, a gift shop and a public deer park.
