Chislehurst Caves

Chislehurst Caves is a set of intersecting tunnels 35 km long. They were dug to extract chalk and flint in the 13th-19th century. They are open to the public, but only in groups with a guide. You can view sections devoted to, among others the Roman period, druids, and World War I, when warehouses and shelters were organized in the tunnels. Also worth seeing is the large bas-relief made in 1995 by Sandy Brown.

The earliest mention of the mines in this place comes from around 1250. They operated until the 1830s. For the next thirty years, lime was made in them. They were first opened to visitors in 1900. Although archaeological and historical research contradict this, many speculations arose about the use of caves by the Romans and Celtic druids.
