South Lakes Safari Zoo

Over 1,000 rare and endangered animals live in the South Lakes Safari Zoo. Their runs are as close as possible to the natural environment. You can see here, among others big cats, giraffes, kangaroos and bears. Among the birds, attention is drawn to vultures, condors and emus, as well as freely flying macaw parrots. You can participate in animal feeding shows, and even for one day take the role of a guardian and accompany employees during their activities.

The zoo was founded by David Bill and his family in 1994. The main attraction in the early years was the section with tigers, where both the smallest (Sumatran) and the largest (Siberian) species were found. However, starting from 1997, incidents with escapes from catwalks and other problems began at the zoo. The most serious accident occurred in 2013, when a babysitter was fatally attacked by a tiger. The zoo was to be closed then. Re-licensing was only possible after the ownership was transferred to the new entity and the necessary changes were made.
