Dunvegan Castle & Gardens
Dunvegan Castle was built on the Isle of Skye, on a rock about 15 meters above sea level. It is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. It has been the ancestral seat of the MacLeod clan for 800 years. The collections include oil painting collections and clan artifacts. The most famous of them is the so-called Fairy Flag, which according to legend has wonderful properties. There is also the Dunvengan Cup and souvenirs such as strands of princely hair.
Adjacent to the castle is a walled garden in which many flowers and ornamental plants grow. You can see the greenhouse, antique gazebo and larch pergola. There is also a pond with water lilies.
Construction of the castle began in the 13th century, probably on the site of an earlier fort. At that time, the promontory was surrounded by a defensive wall. In the following centuries, the rest of the buildings were built, including a four-storey tower and a drawbridge.
