The Isle of Skye is Scotland's second largest island and is famous for its stunning scenery and very variable weather. Here you can find typical Scottish landscapes, from rocky cliffs to empty valleys and grass and moorland covered mountains to remarkable rock formations and castles.
The name of the island translates as "island of fogs" or "island of clouds" and it reflects the perfect weather here. Most of the year, even in summer it is cloudy and humid, but the weather can change in moments from sun to heavy rain or vice versa.
The greatest attraction of the Isle of Skye is its stunning, wild and rugged landscapes. The most famous places are the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock with Mealt Falls, Cape Neist Point, Quiraing Mountains, Fairy Glen valley with waterfalls and lakes, and Coral Beach.
The most famous castle on Skye is Dunvegan Castle and Gardens. This medieval rock fortress is the seat of the MacLeod family. Currently, there is a museum inside and the picturesque gardens are open to the public. The ruins of Duntulum and Caisteal Maol castles are also known.
Skye, like the rest of Scotland, is famous for the production of whiskey. The most famous of the local distilleries is Talisker, founded in 1825 and still producing whiskey using traditional methods.
