Imperial War Museum Duxford
It is a branch of the Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire and the largest aviation museum in the United Kingdom. The seven main exhibition buildings house about 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and warships. Movies, photos, documents, books and artifacts are also stored here. The facility also has the Parachute Regiment Museum (known as Airborne Assault) and the Royal Anglian Regiment.
The museum was opened in 1920 to honor the war effort and dedication of the British Empire. Duxford Airport, where one of its branches is located, was initially served by the Royal Air Force (RAF). During the Second World War, it played a significant role in the Battle of Britain. Duxford remained an active RAF airport until 1961. In 1969, part of its area was donated to the needs of the museum, and the whole airport was commissioned for this purpose seven years later.
