Yorkshire Dales National Park
Yorkshire Dales National Park covers the area of three large and several smaller picturesque valleys. You can see here both steep mountain slopes with waterfalls, wild heaths and old forests, as well as fields and meadows. There are several castles here, including in Richmond, Bolton and Middleham, open to tourists. Exploring the caves is another attraction. There are also many walking and cycling paths in the park.
The cave system in Yorkshire is one of the largest in the country. You can find here The Three Counties System, which stretches 86 km, making it the longest in the country and the twenty-sixth in the world.
The park was founded in 1954 and its area is nearly 2,200 km2. The word 'dale' comes from the Old English word 'dell', meaning valley. It appears in the names of most of the valleys in the park, and is accompanied by the names of rivers flowing through individual valleys.
