Rietberg Museum
Local name: Museum Rietberg
The Rietberg Museum in Zurich is an ethnological museum that has gathered a rich art collection from Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania. The exhibition includes, among others masks and sculptures. It is located in the Rieterpark (historic landscape park from the 19th century).
The museum exhibition can be admired in several historic buildings, including at Villa Wesendonck, Villa Rieter and Villa Schönberg. The facilities come largely from private donors.
The museum issues a magazine entitled "Artibus Asiae", which features interesting articles on Asian art and architecture.
The institution belongs to the city, which in the 1940s bought Rieterpark and Villa Wesendonck. In subsequent years, the remaining buildings were bought and thoroughly modernized, adapting to the needs of the museum. In 2007, the Smaragd building was commissioned, some of which is located underground.
