Ellen Keys Strand

Local name: Ellen Keys Strand

Ellen Keys Strand is a museum dedicated to the life and work of Elley Key. It is located in the residence where the writer lived from 1911 until her death in 1926. The house is situated on the southern slope of the Omberg mountain, by Lake Vättern. Its architecture is inspired by the Art Nouveau, Italian and Swedish styles.

Inside the residence is a collection of artworks, including paintings by Prince Eugene, Richard Berg, Karl Nordström, Carl Larsson, and Anders Zorn. Most of the works gathered here were gifts to the Keys directly from the artists themselves. There is also an extensive collection of books formerly owned by the writer.

Ellen Strand was an active feminist and peace activist. During World War I, she was involved in public debates, demanding, inter alia, granting women the right to vote. She donated her house to a foundation working for women.
