Karlshamn is a Baltic port founded in the 17th century by Charles X Gustav. It is known as the Swedish fishing center and the nearby Eriksbergs Wildlife Park, showcasing animals in their natural habitat.
The beginnings of the city are related to the Swedish expansion in the Baltic region. Charles X Gustav was looking for a place for a new port for part of his navy and decided that a part of the coast, surrounded on two sides by rocks, hidden behind small islands, would be an excellent base for his ships. Thus, in the second half of the 17th century, Karlshamn, or Charles Harbor, was established.
Today, the port continues to play a key role in the city's economy. In addition, the light processing and mining industry is developing here. Karlshamn is also often visited by tourists. In summer, the local beaches and coastal islands are a great place to relax. Some of them have a permanent ferry connection, which significantly improves communication.
A highlight in the vicinity of Karlshamn is the Eriksbergs Wildlife Park. On large catwalks live, among others bisons, royal deer and elks. The whole thing is designed in such a way that you have the impression of walking through a natural forest.
The coast around Karlshamn and its numerous rivers and lakes are a real fishing paradise. There are crowds of people flock to the city, incl. in search of salmon that flow through the local rivers to spawn. A part of the coast called Mörrumsån is a particularly popular area for anglers.
