The Pompidou Malaga Center was opened in 2015 and is a branch of the Pompidou National Center for Culture and Arts in Paris. The facility is the first external seat of the French museum located outside the country. His collection presents phenomenal works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Over 80 paintings and photographs of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo will delight not only contemporary art enthusiasts.
The center was founded on the initiative of the mayor of Francisco de la Torre and the French ambassador Bruno Delaye. The two men met at a France-Spain friendly match, which took place in 2008 at the local La Rosaleda stadium.
The Pompidou Center in Paris has signed a five-year agreement with the Spanish city for the use of the name and access to huge collections. For this, the mayor of Málaga pays EUR 1 million to the French museum every year.
