The church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and San Luis Obispo is one of the most famous and most visited churches in the old quarter of the Spanish capital. It is the only surviving part of the old Carmen Calzado monastery. Although many valuable works of art were destroyed during the wars, you can still find wonderful paintings and architecture here. It is worth paying attention to the main altar with the image of Virgen del Carmen by Juan Sánchez Barba, as well as the reverently sculpture of Christ lying "Cristo yacente".
The church was built in the 17th century according to the plans of the architect Miguel de Soria. Unfortunately, the Spanish Civil War did not spare the temple - although the building itself did not suffer, it was completely looted, and many valuable works of art were destroyed. However, the war damage meant that the Carmen church was transformed into an independent parish.
