The church of San Pedro el Real, also known as San Pedro el Viejo is a small temple from the 15th century located in the center of Madrid. Its most interesting element is the medieval tower, built in the mudejar style in the mid-fourteenth century. The slanted belfry with double windows is decorated with arches in a horseshoe and resembles a minaret. It was built by King Alfonso XI to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Algeciras in 1344.
The church also has the graves of kings Alfonso I of Asturias and Ramiro II of León. You can also see the figure of Jesus known under the name Jesús el Pobre, meaning Jesus the Poor, carved by Juan Astorg at the end of the 18th century. The church itself was thoroughly renovated in the 17th and then in the 19th century. As a result of these renovations, it obtained a new facade and portals.
