Sacred Heart Expiatory Temple
Local name: Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Tibidabo Hill belongs to the most characteristic points in Barcelona. Built from a white tenement house, a two-story temple with a powerful figure of Jesus in the middle tower is visible from many points of the city. It is also a great viewpoint.
The church was built at the beginning of the 21st century. It consists of two temples, the lower hidden in the crypts and the upper, visible from afar thanks to the powerful white towers. The lower temple has a neo-Byzantine character, with numerous frescoes depicting scenes from the Holy Bible.
The upper church is a neo-Gothic building. It was built on a square plan. It is covered by an eight-pole dome supported on columns. Above it rises a high central tower with a figure of Christ and four smaller ones placed on the corners. The nave is finished with three semi-circular apses. The interior of the temple is simple but monumental. They are decorated with stone sculptures and colorful stained glass windows.
