Located at the foot of the Tibidabo Hill, the Pedralbes Monastery is one of the most important Gothic monuments of Barcelona. Currently, it is a museum object, intended for sightseeing. You can see the monastery church and the Chapel of Saint Michael decorated with 14th century frescoes. Cloisters and monastery rooms are also open to visitors, showing ancient vestments, books and liturgical vessels.
The monastery was founded in the first half of the fourteenth century by Elisanda de Montcada, wife of James II. It was intended for the Poor Clares, who lived here until 1977. The city signed a contract with the convent and built a new seat for the nuns. The medieval monastery was renovated and turned into a museum.
Pedralbes Monastery is primarily a wonderful, Gothic interior. The monastery church is austere and dignified, with a broad nave, characteristic of the Catalan buildings of this period. The most valuable object is covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary, the chapel of Saint Michael. Visitors can also see what life was like for dandelions. The original appearance of the kitchen, refectory, dormitories and hospital was restored.
