Nova Icaria Park

Local name: Parc de la Nova Icària

Parc de la Nova Icària in Barcelona's Sant Martí district was created during the revitalization of this part of the city in connection with the 1992 Olympic Games. The biggest attraction and showcase of the park is the vast lake located in its center, which resembles a Greek island in the Aegean Sea - Ikaria (Greek Ικαρία).

The MBM Arquitectes group was responsible for the park's design. The coastal areas in which the park was created were previously used for industrial purposes. Tourists can cross the reservoir waters by choosing one of the wooden bridges. The vegetation is dominated by tall Washington palm trees, eucalyptus trees and olive trees.

The name Nowa Ikaria is associated with the person of Étienne Cabet, a propagator of combining socialist ideas with the values of early Christianity. In his work "Voyage en Icarie" from 1840 he described the system in his opinion. In the 1840s, his supporters settled in the area around Poblenou, calling this place New Ikaria.
