Museum of Funeral Carriages

Local name: Museu de Carrosses Fúnebres

The Museu de Carrosses Fúnebres gathered a collection of funeral vehicles from different eras. You can admire 19 original exhibits, including: historic horse caravans, and the so-called accompanying vehicles, e.g. a black-lined wagon for widows. The museum was founded in 1970, its founder was Cristobal Torra.

The exhibition also presents funeral rituals of various cultures from around the world, from the earliest times to the present day. Visitors can learn about the history of funeral cars and their types.

The carts began to be used at the beginning of the 19th century. During this time, cemeteries in cities were closed in accordance with the royal decree to avoid epidemics of various diseases. New cemeteries were created outside the city walls, so proper transport was necessary.
