Lying in the Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora is often called the winter capital of Slovenia. There is a large ski resort here, and in the neighboring Planica one of the world's largest ski jumps, Velikanka.
Until the second half of the 19th century, Kanjska Gora was an ordinary mountain town along the trade route. When mountain and ski tourism began to develop throughout Europe, its potential as a resort was noticed. However, the town changed the most after World War II, when ski slopes and a ski jump complex were constructed.
Today, Kranjska Gora is a year-round tourist destination that attracts skiers and lovers of mountain hiking. In its vicinity there is the Triglav National Park covering the highest parts of the Julian Alps. This makes it an ideal starting point for mountain hiking and climbing.
In winter, the resort has approximately 20 km of ski slopes as well as a snow park and 40 km of cross-country skiing tracks. Due to the location of the village in the vicinity of the Austrian and Italian borders, ski passes are combined with the local resorts, which significantly increases the possibilities for skiers.
The town experiences the biggest siege every year around March 20, when the competitions ending the World Cup in ski jumping take place. The final flight competition takes place on Velikanka and the winner of the series receives the prize for the entire season.
