Tematín Castle

Local name: Hrad Tematín

The ruins of a 13th-century castle located 10 km from the town of Lúka, from which the blue tourist trail leads. They rise on a forested, limestone hill at an altitude of over 560 m.

The castle served as a defensive and signaling function. It consisted of lower and upper parts, which were separated by a moat carved in the rock. Until 1369 it was royal property, later it was owned by private owners. Over the centuries, it has been extended many times to enable it to fulfill its function as well as possible. Among other things, the walls were strengthened, defensive towers were added. In 1710 it was seriously damaged as a result of an imperial army attack and since then it began to fall into ruin.

Its last owner was General Mikuláš Bercsényi, who, according to legend, managed to escape from the castle and save his life, because one of his subjects dressed up for him and handed over to the enemy.
