The Szczawnickie Mountains are located in northwestern Slovakia. These are mountains of volcanic origin with a very complicated ridge course. They are covered with oak and beech forests. In their area there are also rocks eagerly visited by climbers.
The Szczawnickie Mountains are built of volcanic rocks, such as andesites, tuffs and rhyolites. They were very rich in numerous natural resources. Metal ore and precious stones were mined here for centuries. The last mine was closed only in 2001. These are also areas where tourism developed very early. The first routes were laid out here as early as 1874.
Thanks to their location and easy accessibility, as well as the varied sculpture, the Szczawnickie Mountains are very often visited by tourists. Around 500 kilometers of walking trails have been marked out. They lead, among others, to the highest peak Sitno (1009 m above sea level) and to old adits, artificial ponds and canals, which drained water from mines.
