Old castle
Local name: Starý zámok
The Old Castle is located in the center of the city of Banská Štiavnica, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to the wealth of monuments.
The oldest building of the castle is the former Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 12th century, around which, at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the gradual erection of walls and towers began. The reason for the reconstruction was the growing threat from the Turks, which is why in the 16th century there were further changes that turned the original basilica into a fortress.
Currently, the castle houses a branch of the Slovak Mining Museum. The exhibition includes a collection of weapons, baroque sculptures, bronze jewelry and tools. You can visit a pipe workshop, a blacksmith's forge and an exhibition of clocks.
