Unfortunately, the Sitno Castle is only picturesque ruins today. They rise at an altitude of about 840 m above sea level on the eastern slope of Mount Sitno. On the top of this mountain, near the castle, there is also a historic wooden observation tower from 1727. Tourists can learn here about issues related to nature protection in the Landscape Park. Numerous hiking trails lead to the ruins from the surrounding towns, it is also possible to reach the ruins by car (although not to the ruins themselves).
The castle was probably built in the second half of the 13th century as one of the royal strongholds built after the Tatar invasions. However, the first written records of this object appeared only in 1548, when the stronghold was taken from the robber knight Melchior Balassy. The castle guarded access to several royal mining towns. It was destroyed only during the anti-Habsburg Rakoczy uprising.
