Statue of Thomas G. Masaryk
Local name: Socha Tomáša G. Masaryka
The statue of Tomasz Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia has been standing since 2010 in front of the National Museum in Bratislava. The bronze figure depicts an elderly president looking with concern at the ground. The inscription on the monument commemorates the creation of the Czechoslovak state in 1918.
The sculpture was erected to commemorate the activities of the Czechoslovak statesman, Tomasz Masaryk, who put great merits in the revival of the state after World War I. Despite this, during its setting protested extreme Slovak national groups, which recognize the period of the interwar period as occupation, only Czech.
The Masaryk monument replaced the sculpture of a lion on the square in front of the Museum, which is a symbol of Czechoslovakia. It was transferred to the City Museum.
