Grasalkovich Palace
Local name: Grasalkovičov palác
The Presidential Palace in Bratislava is also called the Grasalkovich Palace, after the name of its first owner. It is a late baroque building standing on Hodzovo namestie, outside the former city walls. The palace is surrounded by a French-style garden that is available to visitors.
The building was erected in 1760 for the Croatian count Anton Grasalkovich. He served as the presidential seat in the years 1939-1945 and after the creation of Slovakia in 1993. After World War II, there was the House of Pioneers and the House of Klement Gottwald.
The palace is a classic late baroque residential type building. The symmetrical two-story facade is divided in the middle with a break with arcades and a balcony surrounding the main entrance. Behind the palace there are gardens with flower beds and hedges and numerous fountains. The palace itself is currently used for state purposes and cannot be visited. The surrounding park is open
