The sanctuary for captive bears includes forests, streams and meadows in the Zărnești area. The animals live here in conditions as close to natural as possible. The reserve can only be visited with a guide. For safety reasons, visits with children under five are not allowed.
The sanctuary was established in 2005 as the first facility of this type in the country. From its inception to 2020, 126 bears were rescued from captivity. Many of them were kept in cages near restaurants, hotels and guesthouses as tourist attractions. At the beginning of 2020, 79 bears lived in the reserve. The animals can be observed from a distance of several meters. Sightseeing takes place in groups of up to 30 people.
