Voroneț Monastery

Local name: Manastirea Voroneț

The defensive monastery dates back to the second half of the 15th century. The complex consists of a church, a belfry and remains of buildings from the 15th-17th centuries. The temple belongs to the group of painted churches from the Bukovina area, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The main painting that immediately attracts attention is the monumental scene of the Last Judgment. It covers the entire western elevation and consists of five levels. The highest is the image of God the Father surrounded by angels and archangels. Below you can see Christ with the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. The middle tier shows Adam and Eve surrounded by figures of prophets and martyrs. Below is the scales of justice, and at the bottom is a scene from paradise and hell.

Historic paintings and frescoes can also be found on the remaining walls of the temple and inside it. It is worth paying attention, among others for a series of 28 paintings depicting scenes from the life of St. George, the patron saint of the church.
