Saon Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Saon

The Orthodox Saon monastery was founded in the mid-19th century, 11 km from the city of Tulcea. Currently, within the monastery complex, there is an old wooden church, a new brick church, as well as residential and farm buildings.

The monastery was founded by a group of monks who left the Celic-Dere monastery. Initially, they created the Saon hermitage, and in 1878 they built the first wooden temple. The hermitage was destroyed by a fire at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but the church survived the flames. In 1909, work began on a new church and monastery complex in the form that we can admire today.
