Stelea Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Stelea

The Orthodox monastery of Stelea is located in the town of Targoviste. It was built in the second half of the 16th century. The monastery complex includes a historic 17th-century church, an abbot's house with cellars dating back to the 15th century, a 16th-century bell tower and monks' cells. The whole building is surrounded by a wall, the oldest elements of which date back to the second half of the 17th century.

The church was built on the foundations of an older temple. Its architecture is an excellent example of traditional Wallachian art with elements of Gothic and Italian styles. Inside the church, it is worth paying attention to the valuable iconostasis with historic icons.

The monastery houses the Archbishop's Museum, the collection of which includes items of spiritual, historical and artistic value from the 17th to the 20th centuries. They include valuable copies of the Bible, wooden crosses, liturgical vessels and icons.
