Neamț Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Neamț

The historic monastery was founded at the beginning of the 14th century and is one of the oldest in historical Moldova. It is also one of the best-preserved examples of Moldavian architecture from the Middle Ages. The delicately decorated façade with Gothic windows and friezes with enameled discs in shades of green, brown and yellow attracts attention.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the monastery housed one of the country's largest libraries and icon workshops. Currently, its collection includes 11,000 volumes and a collection of valuable icons and other works of Orthodox art. In the following centuries, the prestige of the monastery declined, but the monastery regained its glory in the 19th century, when a printing house was established there.

The first church in the monastery was a fairly simple stone temple. The church that we can see today comes from the reign of Stefan II the Great.
