Cetatea Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Cetățuia

Cetatea Monastery in Iasi was built on top of Cetățuia Hill by Prince Gheorghe Duc in the 17th century. The complex includes the main church, a small palace built as a prince's quarters, a spacious gothic hall, and residential and utility rooms. The monastery is surrounded by a high wall with a watchtower and defensive towers.

The appearance of the monastery church refers to the church in the monastery of the Three Holy Hierarchs in Iasi. Inside there are antique frescoes made by the then masters, Mihai and Gheorghe Dima, and local artists Stefan and Nicolae. The paintings show, among others life and death of John the Baptist and 23 scenes from the Akathist, a kind of liturgical hymn, to the Mother of God.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that in 1682 a printing house was established at the monastery, where books in Greek were published. Most of the monks living in the monastery at that time were also of Greek origin.
