Metropolitan Cathedral

Local name: Catedrala Mitropolitană

The cathedral was built in the 19th century. Its eclectic architecture is clearly inspired by the Italian Renaissance style, but you can also see neoclassical and neo-baroque elements. Inside, it is worth paying attention to the paintings by Tattarescu, which combine Romanian tradition with Western influences, especially Italian painting.

The cathedral was built on a rectangular plan measuring 56 m in length and 34 m in width. At its corners there are four towers with a height reaching 52 m. Thanks to them it is one of the highest historical buildings in the country. The eastern facade is decorated with 6 Corinthian columns erected on a stone pedestal. Above them is a large bas-relief. On the west facade there are 8 columns, and above them there is a balcony and a stone sculpture depicting Saint. George.

There are two valuable 16th-century icons in the temple. They depict Christ Pantocrator, Madonna and Child. The relics of the 11th century nun, Saint. Paraskeva.
