Cozia Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Cozia

The Orthodox monastery was built in the second half of the 14th century. It is one of the most valuable examples of Wallachian art from the medieval period. The center of the complex is the church built on a rectangular plan with apses. The interior of the temple is decorated with paintings, some of which date back to the 14th century. a votive painting showing Mircza the Old, founder of the monastery.

The church is surrounded by residential and farm buildings. There are also two chapels among them. The first is the oratory of Hospodar Mihnei II from the second half of the 16th century, and the second is the 17th-century chapel dedicated to Constantine Brâncoveanu. In the monastery complex there is also a hospital church from 1543. Its interiors are well preserved with frescoes depicting historical scenes, including those showing Mircza the Old and his sons.
